3ds Max scene files take longer than normal to open (sometimes in excess of 20 minutes).

This problem may be compounded when a master scene file is loaded containing Xref scenes, or files from across a network.

Causes:

There are many possible causes, but “animated layers” almost always have a lot to do with it, sometimes there are thousands of them and they make writing the file as difficult as importing or merging any object, making any task very slow and heavy.

Includes, but is not limited to:

Firtsly: Number of objects in the scene.

Secondly: Complexity of each object in the scene.

Thirdly: Outdated graphic drivers.

Opening files from a network location.

Running 3ds Max in a virtual environment.

Scene uses XRefs or networked Xref objects.

Most importantly: Unused animation paths and motion clips.
